Arthur Mitchell became Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party in June 2005. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in a by-election held November 21, 2005 and re-elected in the general election of October 10, 2006.
Mr. Mitchell is the party leader and caucus critic for the Executive Council Office and the Department of Finance. He shares critic responsibilities for the Department of Health and Social Services with Eric Fairclough.
Prior to entering public life Mr. Mitchell owned the Atlin General Store for 26 years and has worked as the Executive Director of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, as a business consultant, realtor and property developer. He was a co-founder of Waterfront Place Developments and also served on the Board of Directors for Northern Vision Devlopment prior to being elected.
Mr. Mitchell is the former Alternate Chair of the Yukon Workers' Compensation Health & Safety Board and has also served on the Finance Committee of the Yukon Arts Centre Board. Mr. Mitchell served for several years on the City of Whitehorse's Parks and Recreation Committee, including a year as chair.
Mr. Mitchell volunteered for seven years for the Food for Learning Breakfast Program and is a former member of the Elijah Smith Elementary School Council.

While living in Atlin, Mr. Mitchell was a founding member of the Atlin Area Planning Commission and served several terms on the Atlin Local Improvement District, including a term as the Chair. He was active in the Atlin District Board of Trade, including serving as President, and involved in the Atlin Visitors' Association. Mr. Mitchell was a vollunteer for the Atlin Volunteer Fire Deptartment for 20 years. He served in several capacities including Fire Chief.
Mr. Mitchell is a licensed private pilot and enjoyed flying his own plane for many years. He currently lives with his wife Nancy in the riding of Copperbelt. The Mitchell’s have two children and one grandchild.
