Leadership 2025

Yesterday, Premier Ranj Pillai announced that he will step aside as party leader and will not be seeking a 3rd term as the MLA for Porter Creek South. Pillai has asked the Executive to immediately begin the process to hold a Leadership Convention to select a new party leader.

The Executive has met and worked out the details for the Leadership Convention. The convention will take place in Whitehorse on June 19, 2025, bringing members together to elect a new leader. Candidate nomination packages are available by emailing [email protected] and the rules for candidates are posted hereThe deadline to submit a nomination entry is May 29, 2025.

Party members will be able to vote in person at the convention. To become a party member, visit www.ylp.ca/membership. For those who can’t attend the convention, a proxy voting option is available - each member may carry one proxy vote. Voting will use a ranked preferential ballot, and multiple rounds may be required to determine the winner.

Ranj will continue to represent Porter Creek South until the next territorial election, which must occur on or before November 3, 2025. He will remain as party leader and Premier until a new successor is chosen.

This process is part of the party’s continued commitment to openness, accountability, and democratic decision-making. This is an exciting time for a strong leadership race that brings Yukoners together and focuses on the future of the territory.
