Whitehorse: Vuntut Gwitchin MLA Darius Elias made the following statement today on the death of former MLA John Edzerza:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of John Edzerza this past weekend.”

“To John’s family, his colleagues and friends, I offer our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.”

"When I last spoke with John it was at the swearing in ceremony of the Yukon Party caucus in the legislature and I wished him well.” 

“We worked closely together on the Select Committee on Anti-Smoking Legislation and during that time it became very evident that John was the same man debating in front of a camera or having a conversation in private.”

"Mr. Edzerza will be remembered as a man of determination and a politician that was always willing to listen and who found a way to reach his goals. One of the things I admired about John was that when he was faced with a challenge, backing down wasn’t part of his vocabulary.  I believe he had a unique political voice in that when hespoke it was obvious that he valued his traditional Tahltan teachings and spirituality and I think that’s how people saw him.”

"I salute John's public service and contribution over the years to improve the day to day lives of Yukoners, a contribution that will stand the test of time.”
