Derek Yap to represent Yukon Liberals for Copperbelt South

Posted by Yukon Liberal Party President on October 08, 2025

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Liberal Party is proud to announce that Derek Yap will represent the riding of Copperbelt South.

A long-time Yukoner, stepfather, husband to storyteller Sharon Shorty and librarian turned IT manager at Yukon University, Derek brings a deep commitment to community and collaboration to the campaign.

Born in Alberta, raised in BC, and working most of his life in the Yukon, Derek has spent his career building connections across the territory - from union activism, to supporting arts and culture, he has worked with community groups and non-profits to strengthen community life.

His decision to run for the Yukon Liberals stems from a shared belief that progress comes from partnership, respect, and practical solutions.

"Derek represents what makes the Yukon strong - community leadership, compassion, and a deep connection to the people around him. We’re thrilled to have him on board. He understands the challenges and opportunities facing Copperbelt South and will bring a thoughtful, solutions-focused voice to the table."

Mike Pemberton, Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party

"I’m running because I believe in the power of community. The Yukon has given me and my family so much - this is my way of giving back. People want politics that’s grounded in respect and action, not division. I’m ready to work hard, listen, and be part of a team that gets things done."
