Yukon Liberal Party thanks Member of the Legislative Assembly for Mountainview, Jeanie McLean, for her service following her decision not to run in the 2025 territorial election

August 15, 2025

First elected in 2016, McLean has served as Minister of Tourism and Culture, Minister responsible for the Women’s Directorate and Minister responsible for the Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board. She is currently Minister of Education and Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate, and has held the role of Deputy Premier since 2023.

As Minister of Education, McLean delivered affordable child care, advanced inclusive education through the RISE program, expanded experiential learning, and supported Indigenous language revitalization. She helped establish the Yukon First Nations School Board and recently renewed the Joint Education Action Plan with Yukon First Nation Governments. McLean oversaw the planning of Yukon University’s new science building, the construction of Kêts’ádań Kų̀ in Burwash Landing, as well as the completion and opening of the Whistle Bend school. McLean has also initiated planning for two new schools in Whitehorse.

As Minister responsible for the Women’s Directorate, McLean led the Yukon’s response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, establishing long-term oversight committees and strengthening relationships with Alaska by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to improve cross-border collaboration on this crisis. She secured funding for many NGO and Yukon First Nation-led projects through the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, advanced the 2SLGBTQ+ Inclusion Action Plan, and implemented the Sexualized Assault Response Team. Her leadership has positioned the Yukon as a national leader in advancing equity, inclusion, and community safety.

In her earlier role as Minister of Tourism and Culture, McLean introduced new tourism and cultural strategies, including measures to stabilize the sector through the pandemic and accelerate post-pandemic recovery. As Minister responsible for YWCHSB, she modernized workplace safety and compensation laws, including protections for PTSD and psychological injuries. As MLA for Mountainview, she supported and led community projects – including a new playground and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation Community Hub – and prioritized pedestrian safety by delivering crosswalks and walking paths around the airport.

“Serving as the MLA for Mountainview and as a Cabinet Minister has been an incredible honour. I’m proud of the work we’ve done to advance equity, inclusion, and reconciliation, and to make real, lasting change for Yukoners. I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all my constituents. Each one of my roles has been deeply meaningful, and I am grateful for the trust and support of my community throughout this journey”

We’re extremely grateful for her leadership. On behalf of our team, I thank her for her service and wish her all the best in what comes next”
