Yukon Liberals Commit to Building a Stronger, More Inclusive Education System

Posted by Yukon Liberal Party President on October 29, 2025

WHITEHORSE — The Yukon Liberal Party is reaffirming its commitment to modernizing the Yukon’s education system, strengthening supports for students and educators, and continuing to build schools that meet the needs of growing of our communities.

Our team will modernize the Education Act to create a more responsive and inclusive system that reflects the voices of parents, educators, and administrators. This includes considering whether a full school board system would improve outcomes for students and ensure that First Nations Language Teachers are formally recognized under the Education Act.

To meet the needs of Yukon’s growing population, the Liberals will continue to invest in new and expanded schools — including building a new high school in Whistle Bend, expanding Porter Creek Secondary, and prioritizing the construction of a new downtown Whitehorse school. We will also support the relocation of École Whitehorse Elementary School in consultation with the community, ensuring the new gym and facilities meet shared needs.

The Liberals will introduce a territory-wide school food program to ensure that every student has access to healthy meals while learning. We will also develop a complex care therapy program for children and youth with cognitive, mental, and physical barriers, closing long-standing gaps in support for students with complex needs.

To help Yukon students succeed beyond high school, the Liberals will review post-secondary support programs, exploring a forgivable loan model similar to the Northwest Territories — one that rewards students who return home after their studies. A new student loan forgiveness program will also be introduced for in-demand trades to help meet workforce needs.

The Liberals are committed to supporting educators by reviewing hiring practices to ensure teachers, Educational Assistants, and Learning Assistants are hired well before the start of the school year. They will also develop a territory-wide policy on cell phone use in schools, in consultation with administrators and education partners.

“Education is the foundation of our future. We’re focused on building schools, giving teachers the tools they need, and making sure every student — wherever they live — has the support to succeed. We’ve listened to families, teachers, and students, and this plan builds on that feedback. It’s about supporting our kids, strengthening our classrooms, and keeping Yukon schools inclusive, strong, and community-focused.”

Mike Pemberton, Yukon Liberal Party Leader

“After nearly 40 years in education, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges and successes of teachers, staff, and students. I’m committed to bringing that experience to building a supportive, inclusive, and strong education system — one that prioritizes students and gives teachers the tools they need to succeed. Our students are the future of the Yukon, and our platform lays out a clear, concrete plan to help every student, educator, and staff member feel supported.”
