Yukon Liberals to establish National Aboriginal Day as a Yukon Statutory Holiday

TESLIN – The Yukon Liberals will establish National Aboriginal Day as a Yukon Statutory Holiday, says Carl Sidney, Liberal candidate for Pelly–Nisutlin.

National Aboriginal Day, celebrated on June 21 of each year, celebrates the diversity and strength of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples, their cultures, and traditions.

“First Nations have made and continue to make enormous contributions to the Yukon based on their centuries of history in the territory,” Sidney said. “Revitalizing, maintaining, and celebrating First Nations knowledge, language, and culture are central to a modern Yukon.”

The Yukon Liberals are committed to renewing government-to-government relationships with Yukon’s First Nations people, building on cooperation and partnerships.

“Respect for Treaties, Final, and Self-Governing Agreements are the map for the way forward for all Yukoners, not just First Nations peoples,” said Sidney.
